| Chungju multipurpose dam which is the largest
water project in Korea was constructed in the South
Han river that meanders through the central region
of the Korean peninsula. Main purposes of this project
were the effective utilization of water resources
through water supply, electrical energy production,
reduction of flood damages in downstream area.
The dam completed in 1986, stands 97.5 meters
high and is 464 meters long. The dam, the largest
concrete gravity dam in Korea, has concrete volume
of 902,000 ton and a reservoir capacity of 2,750
million ton. It also has the largest hydropower
plant in Korea with the installed capacity of
400 MW.
At 19.6 km downstream from the maindam, a re-regulation
dam was constructed in order to regulate the flow
discharged for the reak energy generation from
the upstream hydropower plant with the capacity
of 12MW is also installed at the re-regulatiom
dam.
To complete the project, it took seven and a half
years, begun in June 1978 and completed in Dec,
1985. The dam has significantly contributed to
reduction the flood damages in the downstream
area inclouding the metropolitancity, and it made
it possible to develop the frequently inundated
area near the Han river like freeways inside the
river banks. It also supply 3,380 million ton
of water annually for municipal, industrial, irrigation
and low flow augmentation in the metropolitan
areas of Seoul and its vicinity cities.
In addition, the dam creates a 65 km long water
course for the boat trip to Tanyang area, which
contributes to the development of sightseeing
resources in our country.
