Hapcheon multipurpose dam was constructed on
the narrow canyon of Hwang river, a tributary
in Nakdong river. The dam located about 16 km
north of hapcheon city is a concrete gravity dam
with a total fill volume of 891 million ton. The
dam of which basin area is 925งด has the dimensions
of 96 meters in height and 472 meters in length,
and it creates a reservoir with the storage capacity
of 790 million ton.
The dam commenced its construction in April 1982,
and completed in May 1989. It has a 100MW hydropower
plant which utilized its geographic characteristics
by constructing a diversion tunnel to increase
the rated head for the maximum hydropower generation.
In addition, a 29 meter high re-regulation dam
with concrete and rockfill combined type was constructed
at 5.6 km downstream from the main dam, and has
a small scale flow-through hydropower plant.
The project supplies 599 ton of various water
annually to the Busan metropolis and its vicinity,
and it reduces flood damage by controlling flood
inflows with the controlling storage of 80 million
ton.
