* Introduction of Qianling
Qianling, the tomb of Tang Emperor GaoZong (li zhi by name) and Empress WuZeTian, lies on Mount liangshan in the north of Qianxian county, Shaanxi province. It is 80km from Xi¡¯an. It¡¯s among the first group of important cultural relics units under state protection.
LiZhi, the ninth son of Emperor Tai Zong, ascended the throne in 649. He reigned for 34 years. he died in luoyang and was buried in QianLing. WuZeTian, named Zhao, once was a concubine of TaiZong. After his death, she won the favour of Emperor GaoZong and became his empress. After the death of GaoZong, she dethroned Emperor zhongzong and the successor RuiZong. Soon she established the Great Zhou Empire and wore the crown. She was the only woman ruler in china¡¯s history. Having reiged for 21 years, she died at the age of 82 in Luoyang. In 706, she was also buried in QianLing.
Mount LiangShan, with a height of 1047.9 meters above sea level, comprises a peak and two lower hills. The peak stands out grandly with the underground palace hidden inside. To the south of it are two hills facing each other west to east, which the local people call Nipple Hills. Viewing it in a distance, QianLing looks like a sleeping beauty. It¡¯s recorded that the cemetery is enclosed with an inner city wall and an outer city wall. The inner wall, with a coverage of 2.3 million square meters, has four gates-the Blue Dragon gate (east), the white Tiger gate (west), the Phoenix gate (south) and the Tortoise gate (north). The outer wall is 40km in circumference. The buildings in the cemetery include a sacrificial hall, side halls and watch towers, etc.
Qianling, built on hills, copied by the capital Tang Changan city, with many large and exquisite stone sculptures, was the model of the successive dynasties. It is known as The First-Rank place of Royal Mausoleums in the Past Dynasties. According to historical records and excavations, Qianling is possibly the only Tang-Dynasty Mausoleum yet unrobbed.
To the southeast of Qianling fan out 17 satellite tombs. From 1960 to 1972, 5 of them were excavated. Over 4000 valuable cultural relics as well as many frescos and the lined carvings had been unearthed. All these provide material data for the study of the politics, economy, military affairs, culture and architecture of the Tang Dynasty. So far the tombs of princess YongTai, Crown prince YiDe and Crown prince zhanghuai have been opened to tourists both from home and abroad.
* Emperor Qin¡¯s Terra-Cotta Museum
Emperor Qin¡¯s Terra-Cotta Museum is located east of Emperor Qin¡¯s Mausoleum, which covers a total area of 20 hectares. Three main buildings of the museum, which were named Pit 1, Pit 2 and Pit 3, were constructed on their original sites in different periods of time. Pit 1 was found in 1974, and their explorations and excavations began in 1974. Following the discovery of Pit 1, Pit 2 and Pit 3 were brought to light in 1976. Pit 2 started to be excavated in 1994 and was opened in October the same year while it was being excavated. Pit 3 was opened in 1989. Besides three pits, two sets of bronze chariots and horses discovered in the west of Emperor Qin¡¯s Mausoleum in December in 1980, were on display in the museum after restoration.
Emperor Qin¡¯s Terra-cotta Museum is not only a treasure house where the tourist can learn history, culture and human civilization, but also a main scenic spot of Xi¡¯an City.
* Introduction of Longmen Caves
One of the three big treasure houses of stone sculptures famous in China, it is located to the bank of the Yihe River 12 kilometers away from the south of Luoyang, where two mountains stand opposite each other and the Yihe River runs eastwards between them. Engraving lasted more than 400 years from Northern Wei Dynasty to the Northern Song Dynasty. Now in existence there are more than 2100 caves, over 100 thousand stone figurines, above 3600 tablets. It ranks first in number among big grottoes in the country. Great boldness of spirit, profound messages and exquisite workmanship make it a unique treasure dazzlingly brilliant in the treasure house of sculptural arts in the world.
* Three Gorges Project
¡¡¡¡The Three Gorges Projec
t (TGP) is located 40 km above the Yichang City. It is a vitally important and backbone project in the development and harnessing of the Yangtze River (Changjiang River). TGP serves as a multi-purpose hydro-development project producing
comprehensive benefits mainly in flood control, power generation and navigation improvement. This multi-purpose project attracts worldwide attention with its largest hydropower station in the world with a capacity of 18,200 MW to be installed. The project construction started in 1993. In 2003, the reservoir will be partly impounded and the first group of units (4¡¿700 MW) will be put into operation. The participants will be invited to visit the magnificent project during the conference.
* Xiaolangdi Project
The Xiaolangdi Multipurpose
Dam Project if located in the mouth o the last gorge on the main stem of the Yellow River, 40km north of Luoyang in Henan Province, 130km downstream of Sanmenxia dam, and 115km upstream of Beijing-Guangzhou railway bridge in Zhengzhou. There is a catchment area of 694200km2 above the dam site, i.e. 92.3% of the total of the Yellow River. Also 91.2% of the total runoff and almost 100% of the sediment discharge are distributed upstream of the dam site.
The reservoir provides a total storage capacity of 12.65 billion m3, including a long-term live portion of 5.1 billion m3.
The project objectives are mainly flood control and sediment reduction, but also water supply, irrigation and power generation. Clear water will be stored and muddy water will be released to promote what is beneficial and eliminate what is harmful.
